Doctor of Interest in Erica Blasberg Suicide Charged With Misdemeanor

August 26, 2010

Okay, so Dr. Thomas Hess was “friends” with Erica Blasberg. They watched golf together at her home, went to a local casino together, and played golf together two days prior to finding her dead in her Henderson, Nevada home.

Now Dr. Hess is trying to explain why he removed evidence from her house the evening he alleges that he found her dead… things like prescription medication, and oh yeah… the suicide note. “I know doing that was – was stupid, but I was trying to save some embarrassment for her.”

Or better yet – maybe some embarrassment for him? Mel Blasberg, Erica’s father, has told ESPN that he thinks that Dr. Thomas Hess and his daughter had an intimate relationship. It’s worth noting that the nature of their relationship hasn’t been confirmed, as the police are not commenting on it.

Hess was arrested after being charged with a misdemeanor for obstruction of justice for removing the medication and the suicide note. He was released after posting bail.

My thought: Her father would be well served to hire an attorney and keep digging. Contrary to what the police might think, most people don’t see this as an open and shut case. I don’t know whose interest is being served here, but it sure as hell isn’t Mel Blasberg’s or his daughter’s….

Erica Blasberg’s Death Ruled Suicide

August 25, 2010

I blogged about this a few days ago, and in that piece Erica Blasberg’s father talked about being afraid of not ever knowing the truth about what might’ve happened. I think his fear was realized today as the coroner who did the autopsy ruled the death a suicide, despite the fact that her “friend” of sorts – Dr. Thomas Hess – tampered with evidence prior to the police arriving.

While the truth may never be known, I will agree with Erica’s father, Mel Blasberg, that things just don’t add up. There’s an angle to this story that appears (to me) to have been avoided in the investigation, at least based upon everything that has been disclosed publicly.

Miyazato wins Safeway; reclaims World No. 1

Miyazato wins Safeway; reclaims World No. 1.

Cristie Kerr certainly had her chances coming down the stretch, but her putter became quite balky late in the round. Very disappointing for her to play the last 6 holes at 1-over par.

Congrats to Ai Miyazato… she’s definitely the top LPGA player this season, with the Safeway being her 5th win of the season. Remarkable year of golf for the young lady.

Juli Inkster disqualified from LPGA Safeway Classic – Tours & News – Golf.com

Juli Inkster disqualified from LPGA Safeway Classic – Tours & News – Golf.com.

Most competitive amateur players know that you can’t use a training aid, weighted club, or a weight donut during an official round of an event. I have a ton of respect for Juli Inkster, but I’m dismayed at her apparent lack of knowledge concerning such an elementary rule in the game.

Absolutely shocked that a seasoned veteran would commit such an obvious no-no….

Erica Blasberg Investigation Nearing End

August 21, 2010

And according to THIS ARTICLE courtesy of the Golf Channel’s Randall Mell, Erica’s father isn’t overly optimistic about the investigation revealing the truth about what happened to his daughter. Hopefully the autopsy and the investigating authorities will reveal what occurred that dreadful evening, as this has been a very sad, unthinkable nightmare for her family the past three months. It would be nice if they, as well as her fans, can finally find some closure on the matter.

CVS Declines Contract Renewal with LPGA

August 20, 2010

More bad news for Commissioner Michael Whan and company, as CVS has decided to not renew their contract as title sponsor next season. With the LPGA Tour already looking for sponsors for two of the biggest events of the season next year (The LPGA Championship and the Tour Championship), it’s imperative that they pull out all of the stops and develop an aggressive marketing campaign to save what’s left of the domestic side of the tour. The fact that they can’t lure a sponsor for even a major tournament underscores the depths of their struggles currently.

At what point does the commish tell the ladies to “fix bayonets” and embark on their own personal campaigns to attract more fans, sponsors, and overall interest in general? I think we’re there. I think we’ve been there for several months now. It’s time to sit down with the ladies and discuss the dire consequences that your tour now finds itself in, and come up with a real solution.

Local Futures Tour Player Gets Apology from Tour CEO

July 29, 2010

Duramed Futures Tour player Sarah Brown, from just across the river in Phillipsburg, NJ, is in the headlines this week… but not for the right reasons.

Brown was incorrectly disqualified from the tour event in New Hampshire for allegedly using nonconforming clubs midway through her round on Sunday, as a tournament official ruled that her wedges were nonconforming per the new USGA groove rule change.

Brown and her father (who is likewise her caddie) disputed the DQ, insisting that PING had designed the wedges to conform to the new rules. As it would turn out, the wedges were indeed conforming and Futures Tour CEO, Zayra Calderon called Brown later to apologize.

David Higdon, chief communications officer for the LPGA chimed in as well. “We made a mistake. It was a matter of miscommunication on whether the clubs conformed or not. It was an unfortunate situation and our mistake, and it will hopefully never happen again.

Unfortunately for Sarah, it was looking to be the best finish of her career before she was made a victim of said “mishandling” and “miscommunication” Sunday afternoon. And apparently Dad doesn’t think too much of the way they’ve tried to handle the situation after the fact.

In THIS ARTICLE courtesy of Sean Martin at GolfWeek, The Browns are seeking a settlement of $5,368 (the amount that they feel she would’ve won had she completed the tournament), a waiver of the 2010 LPGA Q-school fee ($5000), and an annual seminar for Futures Tour rules officials outlining the proper protocols for handling certain rules situations. Dad went even further in saying that he thinks that seminar should be called the “Sarah Brown Seminar.”

Tour CEO, Zayra Calderon, proposed a $2000 settlement to make amends, but the Browns feel that’s not nearly enough. And Sarah’s father even hinted that legal action isn’t entirely out of the question, although he said that he would prefer to not have to go that route. “It’s like punching someone in the nose and taking their wallet. The tour wants to return the wallet and say, ‘I’m sorry.’ What about the punch in the nose?

My opinion (and you knew it was coming) is unfortunately people make mistakes and while indeed – a young lady was certainly wronged, the restitution that Dad is seeking seems more severe than the crime committed in this situation.

Regardless, hopefully Sarah can rebound and continue playing well in the tournaments to come, with her conforming wedges at that.
