It’s Official: Tiger and Elin are Divorced

August 23, 2010

Nothing to add, really. We all saw this day coming, and it’s finally here. What becomes of the next chapter of their personal lives – who knows… Tiger Woods now has one less distraction, and Elin Nordegren now probably finds herself in the company of Bill Gates and Oprah on the Forbes Richest People in the World list.

Arjun Atwal wins Wyndham Championship by one shot over David Toms – Tours & News – Golf.com.

Another first-time winner steals the spotlight this season, but it goes a little deeper than that… Arjun Atwal is the first Indian-born player to ever win on the PGA Tour, and the first Monday Qualifier to prevail in the past 24 years. And… he secured a card for next season.

Good stuff!

Fred Funk wins third Champions Tour major – Tours & News – Golf.com

Fred Funk wins third Champions Tour major – Tours & News – Golf.com.

Always a pleasure to watch Fred Funk play golf. He gets about his business, doesn’t play slow, and just always seems eager to be out playing in front of the fans. And, of course, it’s always nice to see one of the shorter hitters take down the bombers on a course ill-suited for guys who can’t bust it off the tee.

Very happy to see him win today. Well played, Mr. Funk.

Miyazato wins Safeway; reclaims World No. 1

Miyazato wins Safeway; reclaims World No. 1.

Cristie Kerr certainly had her chances coming down the stretch, but her putter became quite balky late in the round. Very disappointing for her to play the last 6 holes at 1-over par.

Congrats to Ai Miyazato… she’s definitely the top LPGA player this season, with the Safeway being her 5th win of the season. Remarkable year of golf for the young lady.

Juli Inkster disqualified from LPGA Safeway Classic – Tours & News – Golf.com

Juli Inkster disqualified from LPGA Safeway Classic – Tours & News – Golf.com.

Most competitive amateur players know that you can’t use a training aid, weighted club, or a weight donut during an official round of an event. I have a ton of respect for Juli Inkster, but I’m dismayed at her apparent lack of knowledge concerning such an elementary rule in the game.

Absolutely shocked that a seasoned veteran would commit such an obvious no-no….

With Television Ratings Down, PGA Tour Losing Leverage for Network Contracts

August 21, 2010

Interesting ARTICLE HERE from the NY Times…

I’ll just throw my $.02 in here, since you knew it was coming anyway. Golf telecasts are BORING. Total snooze fests, most of them. They’re also predictable. When it’s halfway through the telecast and they suddenly pan to a guy that hasn’t been on television once in the first 90 minutes of coverage, that player is on the green. And you know what’s coming next – he drains a 40 footer for birdie.

They show too much putting in televised golf. People want to see excitement, long tee balls and approach shots. Oh, and one more thing… probably the best thing they could do overall. Unless it’s a major tournament, or maybe a fairly prestigious non-major event like The Players Championship or Ryder Cup, they’d be well served to knock an hour off of the coverage. Two hours is plenty for a single telecast. Most people are not going to set aside 6+ hours of their weekend to watch 3 hours of guys making 3 footers to save par and endless Cialis commercials. Condense the coverage, and spice up the telecasts.

They’ve got some great technology there at their disposal. That aim point for putting and that ball tracer for tee shots – that’s neat stuff. Use it.

Will any of these ideas increase viewership more than having Tiger or Phil in the final group on Sunday? Probably not. But it’s asking an awful lot of even the most avid of golf fans to take in 6 hours of televised golf on the weekend. Not gonna happen.

Interesting Read on Rolling Back the Ball

August 21, 2010

Came across THIS ARTICLE from Waggle Room Golf Blog, and thought I’d share it here.

My thoughts: I don’t ever foresee the day that the USGA will take a proactive stance on the distance issue. The bottom line is that there’s simply too much money at stake for the companies that are churning out those $4.00 golf balls, and besides… serious consideration of the idea presents an “I told you so” premise that the USGA just wouldn’t ever agree to accept. They’re the caretakers of the game alright, as long as it’s on their terms…. if they didn’t come up with the idea, then it’s not worth consideration as far as they’re concerned. Too much ego there.

Erica Blasberg Investigation Nearing End

August 21, 2010

And according to THIS ARTICLE courtesy of the Golf Channel’s Randall Mell, Erica’s father isn’t overly optimistic about the investigation revealing the truth about what happened to his daughter. Hopefully the autopsy and the investigating authorities will reveal what occurred that dreadful evening, as this has been a very sad, unthinkable nightmare for her family the past three months. It would be nice if they, as well as her fans, can finally find some closure on the matter.

Houston Teen Cards Two Aces in the Same Round

August 21, 2010

Pretty remarkable story, especially considering that the stated odds of that happening are 67 million to 1… Those playing with him undoubtedly witnessed something they’ll never see again in their lifetimes.

PGATOUR.COM – The Daily Wrap-up, Round 1: Wyndham Championship.

And the odds of seeing another 59 this season are??? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?……

Here’s an idea… let’s make the par values at some of these courses 80. That way if they shoot 12-under, they’re only shooting 68!
