Scouting the AT&T National at Aronimink

June 30, 2010

The PGA Tour rolls into the Philadelphia region this week, with Tiger Woods hosting/headlining the event at the AT&T National at Aronimink. And I’m proud to announce that I will be in attendance there on Friday to witness the action firsthand!

Aronimink Golf Club was originally designed in 1928 by none other than Donald Ross, and underwent a slight redesign back in 2000 by Ron Pritchard. The tournament this week will be only the second PGA Tournament ever hosted here, with the first one going all the way back to 1962 when Aronimink hosted the PGA Championship that season. Gary Player went on to win the event with a 2-under score of 278.

Hometown Favorites

West Chester, PA will be fairly represented this week with two names very familiar with PGA Tour fans – Sean O’Hair and Jim Furyk. Sean currently resides in the West Chester area and considers Aronimink his home club of affiliation. Jim was born in West Chester in 1970, and his father worked as a professional at several courses in the area.

Furyk is in the midst of one of his best seasons ever, having won two events already this year and looking to make this his third. Aronimink is a great course for Jim, as it’s not overly long but does require a premium on approach shots into the Donald Ross design greens. He drew a comfortable pairing with Lucas Glover and Scott Verplank for the first two rounds, so I expect to see his quirky swing in the mix of things this weekend.

A fractured left arm put Sean O’Hair off to a slow start this season, but he’s finished T-12 in three of his last four tournaments, most notably the US Open at Pebble Beach a few weeks back. His best finish thus far this season was at the season-opening SBS Championship, where he finished T-4. He’s drawn a fairly popular pairing for the first two rounds this week as well, playing with a guy who just won the Memorial a few weeks ago – Justin Rose, and the long-hitting J.B. Holmes. That will be a popular gallery for the first two days, rest assured.

The Host with the Most

Undoubtedly the most popular gallery that awaits the first two rounds this week at Aronimink will include the host – Tiger Woods, and a guy that Woods himself has been quoted as saying is “freakishly long” off the tee – Dustin Johnson, and last but not least – Davis Love III, who has put some remarkable scoring rounds together this year but has yet to hold it together for all four days.

Points of Interest: This will be Johnson’s first tournament back since his meltdown two weeks ago in the final round of the US Open. It will be interesting to see if the young man can put that disappointment behind him and continue playing the solid golf he’s played this season. Of course, Tiger comes into this week’s event still winless in 5 starts this season. His best finishes this year have been in the first two majors, finishing T-4 at both the Masters and the US Open. He is the defending champion of this event, as he held off a late charge by Hunter Mahan last year to prevail at Congressional Country Club, the former host venue of the event. Davis Love III has three top 10′s this season, finished T-14 at Bayhill, T-17 at Quail Hollow, and finished T-6 at the US Open a few weeks back. Davis endured a tough stretch earlier in the season beginning in February, missing the cut in 5 of his next 6 starts. Davis goes into this week’s event hoping to put together four solid rounds, something that he’s struggled with over the past couple of seasons. His last win came at the Children’s Miracle Championship at Disney, back in 2008.

Other Notables in the Field

Y.E. Yang, Justin Leonard, Rickie Fowler, Aaron Baddeley, Vijay Singh, Robert Allenby, David Toms, Rocco Mediate, Ricky Barnes, Ben Crane, Boo Weekley, Bo Van Pelt

Week in Review: News and Notes

June 29, 2010

Bubba Watson’s Wait is Over

He’d been close on numerous occasions, with 4 second place finishes on his resume since 2006. In a game as fickle and conditional as golf, winning can be just as much a matter of timing as anything else. But when you’ve been so close on numerous occasions yet just can’t seem to cross the finish line, it can cause you to doubt yourself and whether or not you have what it takes to win. But on Sunday afternoon, all of that frustration and doubt finally ended for Bubba Watson, who defeated Corey Pavin and Scott Verplank in a sudden-death playoff at the Traveler’s Championship to earn his first-ever PGA Tour win.

And as one could expect, it was highly emotional. “I’m a very emotional guy. I cry all the time. When I go to church on Sunday, I cry at church. I couldn’t get the ‘Yes’ out of ‘I do’ at my wedding. The pastor said, ‘You got to say it. You can’t just nod. You can’t nod.’ Everybody has issues. My family had some issues. My dad is battling cancer. My wife last year thought she had a tumor in her brain. We got lucky with that one, and now, we’re battling with my dad. It’s emotional.”

Emotional on so many levels, for sure. It’s always nice seeing a good guy win, and Bubba Watson most certainly qualifies in that department as well. He’s not just a winner as a person, but as a professional golfer as well. Congrats, Bubba. May it be the first of many more to come.

Play With Guys Your Own Age, Would Ya?

Corey Pavin is an absolute bulldog. Being outdriven by guys by nearly 50 yards and nearly half his age, you’d think that he’d appreciate the competitive scenery at the 50-and-over stage. But for some odd reason, Corey still enjoys seeing how his game measures up against the young guns.

Last weekend at the Travelers Championship, Corey’s primary goal was to scout the talent for his upcoming Ryder Cup team. But he caught a little fire on the way, posted four rounds in the 60′s, and found himself knee deep in a three-way playoff Sunday evening. Unfortunately a popped-up tee shot with 3wood would lead to his undoing on the first playoff hole, but Corey showed that he’s still got plenty of game to contend. Maybe he should give a little more consideration to being a playing captain at this year’s Ryder… he’d certainly get my vote.

Every Rose Has It’s Thorn

When it’s good, it’s really good. When it’s bad, you just can’t get finished with the round soon enough. For Justin Rose, the past couple of weeks have been about as good as it gets. But Sunday, oyi… Sunday was the culmination of many bad things. Justin Rose entered the final round with a 3-shot lead, but lost his concentration, lost his swing, and imploded coming in Sunday afternoon with a 4-over par performance on the final 9 holes, essentially giving the tournament away. He barely finished inside the top 10, tied for 9th.

Kerr’s Epic Performance in LPGA Championship One to Remember

With an incredible 8-stroke lead after the third round Saturday evening at the LPGA Championship, Kerr said that she didn’t want to let up. And she meant every word that she said. Sunday, Kerr continued her phenomenal performance as she totally dominated both the course and the field, shooting a final round of 6-under par 66, and winning the 2nd major of the LPGA season by one of the most lopsided margins ever in a major – 12 strokes. As an added bonus, Sunday’s win elevated her to number 1 in the world rankings, at least for now. And by the looks of things, she plans on staying there for a while.

Our congrats to Cristie Kerr and one of the most dominating performances ever in major tournament golf. As Johnny Miller would say, good stuff.

Calcavecchia Earns Honorable Mention in Champions Tour Debut

Calc’s Champions Tour career certainly didn’t get off on the right footing, as just minutes prior to his first tee shot of the tournament on Friday he realized that he had two different types of balls in his bag and no pin sheet. But once he got that squared away, he slowly got things moving in the right direction. In Calc’s first senior tournament, he carded only one bogey and managed all three rounds in the 60′s, shooting 12-under for the event, three shots back of the winner, Loren Roberts, finishing tied for 6th.

Congrats on a solid start in the new chapter, Calc.

Calc fired another solid round of 4-under par 68 on Saturday to stay within 3 shots of the lead heading into Sunday. Not a bad debut, especially considering that he’s certainly capable of putting a good round together on Sunday to vie for the championship. It’s been a long time since he’s found himself in contention on Sunday, so he’s gotta be enjoying life a bit more now. But he’ll have to play well to win, no doubt about it. Those guys still have a lot of game left.

Prediction: Kerr wins tomorrow going away and becomes the new Number One player in women’s golf. I don’t see an epic collapse, not with the way that she’s been playing this week.

Hopefully I get home tomorrow in time to catch the finish. :)

It will be very interesting to see if he can hang on tomorrow and pull out another win. If so, Justin will join Els and Furyk as players with multiple wins this season on the PGA Tour.

Reminds me of that old adage on tour: The best time to win is right after you’ve just won. Justin is playing some exceptional golf, the Memorial appears to have been the boost that he needed. AND… in some way, if he can win this weekend, it kinda proves the point that maybe he should’ve been in the US Open all along.

Kerr Taking Dead Aim in LPGA Championship

That’s what I’m talking about. Someone who’s obviously gotten tired of all of the criticism directed at the American players and is showing what she’s made of. That’s what you call “responding.”

“Calc”ulating a New Life

June 26, 2010

When Mark Calcavecchia holed the final putt of his PGA Tour career three weeks ago at the Memorial, there wasn’t an enormous standing ovation or an emotional golfer soaking in the final moments of what would typically be ceremonial reflection. It was a bogey putt for a round of 3-over 75, and Calc looked tired and ready to move on to the next chapter of his life.

That next chapter began today, at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open on the Champions Tour.

Over 29 years have passed since the last time that Calc stood on the very first tee of a professional tournament as a rookie. You’d think that a guy with that many tournaments under his belt would be over the jitters and nervousness, but Calc admitted that he was a little anxious. So anxious, as a matter of fact, that he got to the first tee before realizing that he had two different types of balls in his bag and no pin sheet. Not exactly the way to make your Champions Tour debut, but we’ll call them rookie mistakes and give him a pass.

Fortunately for Calc, that episode prior to the round was the only trouble he’d have in his debut. He started the day with two pars, then picked up a birdie on the par5 4th. He continued with 4 consecutive pars before picking up another birdie on the par4 9th, making the turn at 2-under.

He would then birdie the 10th, the 11th, and the 12th, and then parred the rest of the way out to come in with 3-under 32, for a bogey-free round of 5-under 67 in his Champions Tour debut. He heads into the weekend only 2 shots off the lead, tied for 4th.

Afterward during the interview he said, “Overall I would have been more than ecstatic if you would have told me I would open with 5-under. I’m very happy with that. I’m just playing pretty good. Thank God. Good timing for me.”

And good timing for the Champions Tour as well, as they continue to add some great players to the 50-and-over bunch.

After win, Miyazato takes over as World No. 1.

What an incredible season that this young lady is having…. it truly is nice seeing someone step up from the pack and separate herself from the rest of the tour. I’m quickly becoming a huge fan of Ai Miyazato.
